Costa Rica, Sustainable Tourism AND Great Diving
You may already know that Costa Rica has diving for everyone. The Guanacaste and Osa peninsula regions are teeming with undersea life. Adventurous divers can hop aboard a liveaboard to the Coco and Malpelo islands, 260 miles west in the Pacific and find hammerheads, manta rays and sometimes the elusive whale shark.
Did you also know that Costa Rica is the leader in sustainable tourism for Latin America? Way ahead of its time, Costa Rica has been at the forefront of sustainable tourism practices and it has been ahead of its time in environmental protection policies and norms. Rich in renewable energy, Costa Rica generates almost 99% of all its electrical energy from clean sources such as geothermal energy, wind and solar energy, burning of sugarcane waste and biomass and hydroelectric energy.
This week, Costa Rica will be hosting the Fourth Meeting of the International Task Force on Sustainable Tourism Development. Members of the Marrakech Process, world leaders and business executives will be gathering from June 8 – 12, 2008 in San Jose and Arenal, Costa Rica to discuss the growing shift towards sustainable tourism practices. Sounds like Costa Rica is the place to go for affordable travel if you want to dive in eco-friendly surroundings.
